Costa Rica adventures begin!

Ah the warm breeze, the lush gree rain forest and the friendly people!
NOT YET!
That’s right. I am still sitting at Boston’s Logan Airport and probably won’t reach Costa Rica until Sunday night, fingers crossed.
Here’s what happened…
So we reached the airport at 1:00 expecting to board Delta 1865 leaving for Atlanta at 2:40 PM. When we checked in, they didn’t tell us anything. Simply pointed us to the gate. At the gate we find out that the flight has been delayed by 1.5 hrs. What does that mean? We’re most probably going to miss our connecting flight from Atlanta to San Jose , Costa Rica.
After standing in the line for 45 minues when we were finally able to talk to an agent we were told not to worry because the connecting flight has also been delayed so we’ll make it in time. No biggie, we wait patiently. I am knitting the dreaded socks ( read my previous sock post) and Gagan is busy with his blackberry.
We boarded the plane at 4:00 and they make us sit in it for another 45 minutes and we finally start taxing to the runway when they announced that because of some mechanical error (could they be any more vague?) they are going to take us back to the gate and swap planes. When we reach the gate there is obviously a big line at the counter. They announced that they will swap planes but they don’t know how long it’ll take.
They tell us that if we want to go home they’ll be glad to accommodate us for the next day. EXCEPT! All the flights are sold out until Sunday!
So at this time we’ve already paid $180 for weekly parking at Logan, the car we rented in San Jose for a week is non-refundable and so are the hotel rooms. The earliest they can get us out of Logan to San Jose is Sunday which cuts our vacation by 2 days and they can’t extend it either because they have no vacancies.
Needless to say we’re completely screwed. I am sitting here at the baggage claim waiting for my bag to show up. They said it can take some time. GREAT!
Will DELTA pay for any of the expenses we’ve incurred? Well , I am going to write to them until they do. And until they’re sick of talking to me. As for the vacation, I am still hopeful that we’ll get there on Sunday and still have a great time. I know we will.
As I am writing this, Gagan is furious and restless. I cannot seem to calm him down, but while we are in Boston, lets see if I can get him to take me to a nice restaurant so at least it’s not all bad. That is if we ever get the bag back.
If there is one thing PR has taught me, its to remain calm in situations like this 
Moral of the story? Do not fly out in peak season. Stay home, stay warm and enjoy warm cider, some home baked cookies and Netflix movies! BTW Netflix rocks. I just watched the whole season 1 of 30 ROCK last night. Well not all the episodes but most.
Thanks for letting me vent. I am sure you guys have been in similar situations. I have been too before but this is by far the WORST!
Now let me get off my soap box and find that hubby of mine. Oh there he is. He’s the one with smoke coming out of his ears!

p.s. We came back home last night without our bags after waiting for 1.5 more at the airport. So as it stands they dont know where our bags are. We’re scheduled to leave early morning tomorrow so fingers crossed we will be there Sunday afternoon. Wish me luck!!! I really do need it.

Good things come in small packages!

In case you didnt know it already, I am gadget queen. I love technology! My newest acquisition is this mini laptop from HP appropriately called HP MINI

How cute is this? But other than the cuteness factor I bought it for a reason. I travel a lot and because I like to be connected when I do, I always carry my laptop but its not always convenient to carry it with me. Not to mention risk losing it.

This little beauty is perfect for travel! When I saw it in Costco, I did a quick price comparison on my Blackberry and before I knew it, the mini came home with me.

But wait, before you go out and splurge on this little beauty, here are some tips to
figure out if this is the right choice for you.

There are a lot of mini laptops available these days. Check the computer configuration before buying.

Mine has:

1 GB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, Intel Processor, Wireless Card built in. That’s the geeky stuff. If you don’t foresee yourself using too many things at once 512 RAM is good enough but 1 GB is better. I have 4GB on my regular laptop and sometimes even that is not enough 😉

It has 2 USB ports, an SD card reader (to transfer your photos directly to your laptop, a webcam built it (although its not very good). It doesn’t have bluetooth but can be added if needed later on. For me BT is not a big deal so it didn’t bother me.

Pros
1. Very lightweight. This weighs only about 2 lbs.
2. Size – very small, can fit anywhere. Size of a typical magazine. In the picture below, its placed on a regular 8.5″ X 11″ sheet of paper. You can see how small it is.
3. It has a built in webcam, comes with xp home installed. So you can skype and pretty much do whatever you want.

Cons
1. The screen is really very small for regular browsing. Vertically nothing fits so you’ll have to keep scrolling. Annoying.
2. The keyboard is cramped so if you are used to 10 finger typing, its slightly harder in this.
3. The touchpad is not very smooth, but its very easy to attach a laptop mouse to it.

Because of the reasons above, I don’t recommend this as your primary computer, but if you’re looking to purchase another one for travel or as a portable “family laptop” for browsing its perfect! Between Gagan and I it’ll be used for travel. I’ve installed all my programs on it and it’s primed and ready to go on it’s first trip to COSTA RICA!!!!

The Love Affair is Over – Relax its just knitting!

Last year I took up knitting. Wanted to see what the big deal is? Yes, I loved the portability of it but have you priced the yarns? They are so expensive and rightly so. There are many independent dyers who put in a lot of time and passion into this. The question is – Can I afford it? Well, I thought socks aren’t bad because even though the yarn is expensive you only need a skein.

So far so good. I got hooked to it. Since last fall, I’ve made more than 5 pairs of socks and collected a few more skeins. Everything was going so well, carrying my little sock project with me everywhere, showing off my hand knit socks to everyone. Everything was good… until last night, when I discovered a BIG HOLE in my sock. What a SHOCK!!!

I have never, I repeat NEVER had a hole in my socks. In the 34 years of my life, like NEVER!!! My lifestyle doesn’t involve a lot of walking, I did everything right, washed them in warm water, air dried them and still? I take really good care of my feet too. Apply a nice foot cream every night! Have been doing that forever. So I don’t understand how this happened?

Now lets talk about the yarn. I bought it in Germany… paid a hefty sum for it too. I am told this is the finest merino wool sock yarn you can find. Now when I got into sock knitting I ASSUMED that you can actually wear ’em after you are done. Apparently not! It’s not even been a year since I started wearing them. I am sorry for going on and on about this but I need to vent!

I am DONE! Soooo DONE with knitting. At least socks. I will of course finish the pair on my needles right now and eventually finish the stash of sock yarn but basically the honeymoon is over.

You see, unlike most sewing projects, knitting is a big time investment! Even if you took the most challenging of sewing projects, you could still whip it up much quicker than a pair of socks.

As for these socks, I do have some yarn left over so hopefully I can find a solution to mend them but right now its too painful to look at. So I hopped into my car and gladly paid FIVE dollars for a wool sock so my feet won’t be cold 🙂

There is one good thing these socks did though, got me out of my blog slump 🙂 I just needed to vent! Thanks for reading and if you have any suggestions for me, PLEASE do post.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must retire to my sewing room to whip up a Jalie sweetheart top. I do have 45 minutes on me right now 😉

December 15th OK Its a new day and I’ve calmed down a bit. So I admit I won’t give up knitting altogether but I’ll make a wiser choice with yarns now. Tini recommended a sock yarn with nylon in it, so that’s what I am going to knit with now. And ajkmama recommended this method to fix these socks which I have to say is PRETTY COOL! I might actually do that. Thanks!!! Good thing I have sock yarn left over.
